We’ve always encouraged our readers to sign up for a trial period and invest some time into testing the builders. This is the only way to know for sure and reading what other people are saying (including our website!) is only going to get you so far!

Hi Jeremy. I currently own an on-line retailer. Our web-site and store is through Miva. This was set up by the prior owners who all knew how to write code. I do not. I desperately need to update our web-site and store but and sooooo confused as to what is the right platform. I am leaning towards Shopify (for no particular reason). We sell single serve coffee (pods, K-cups) and have about 200 different items that we sell. Our Miva store currently ties in with Shipworks to manage our orders and shipments. I guess I would like to continue to use Shipworks but it is not 100% necessary. I would love to hear your recommendations. Thanks!

I have been fairly happy with Shopify. The price is reasonable. The support has been excellent (and my Canadian speaking skills continue to improve). My biggest problem has been trying to improve my SEO. Anything Shopify can do to help me with that would be much appreciated. The Kit app has been somewhat helpful, but I get lost in the setup on my end on some of the Kit options/suggestions. My geek skills are on the low end.
We switched twice in three years- first from Netsuite to Magento, both of which were very complex to build our site on, and then to Shopify, which has proven to be a great decision. We were able to save thousands of dollars a year in developer fees and even I (the owner) have been able to easily create pages and content for our site with little technical knowledge.
I didn’t like how Woocommerce works and how indirect the fees can be, and unlike Shopify who had a very straightforward fee. But my business is not MAINLY about the products, it’s more of the community and the content which WordPress can properly handle better — in my opinion. The one thing I like about Shopify is the hosting, it’s faster than most WordPress sites (who usually have shared-hosting).

These reviews are rigged. Shopify is outragous, they require you to buy an app to get simple tiered pricing in your store, then take $0.30 plus a percentage for EACH sale you make… I hope I will never get to a point in my life where myself or anyone I know will need to use shopify. I would rather spend 4 years of school learning computer science, it would be the cheaper route after 2 years of using shopify. Shopify makes everything seamless and has a number of apps that help me do other things like marketing. It's not as inexpensive as Square for POS, but it also is way more powerful. The customer service has also been great. I hate calling for customer service, so I use their Chat feature and always get an answer to my questions or issues.

Further, as you pointed out, Shopify has a lot of apps that you can bolt on to your store to do a lot more things (such as product fulfilment, integration with accounting software, etc). Just note that not all of them are free, as there are some premium apps which do have a fee per month, but if applied appropriately can actually free up a lot of your time over time!

Regarding size, it depends on how many products you plan on stocking and selling. If you’re planning on selling more than 50 products then Shopify’s scalability would probably be better suited to the job. This is because Shopify is built so that you don’t have to re-platform again down the road even if the business continues to grow. It can cater to businesses that are making a few thousand dollars as well as businesses that are selling millions of dollars in products.
My only question about Salesforce's recent revenue announcement is why the company described the vast majority of its nonprofessional services revenues as "subscription and support." If you really want to customize your store further, the company offers customizable H1, title, and meta tags. Also, the URLs are all SEO friendly. Shopify has partnered with Google in order to occasionally give you advertising money for a new AdWords account. I certainly wouldn't base my decision on which ecommerce platform gives me money to advertise on Google, but I guess it's a nice bonus.
