I’m so happy I found this blog b/c it’s filled with a lot of good information; and of course I have a small business question. I currently have a Wix ecommerce store, but Wix doesn’t allow me to have the following options for my customers: Register (create account), Login/My Account, and a Customer Loyalty program. While I love the ease of managing my Wix site by myself and their monthly eccommerce price. I’m just not too sure where to go. Maybe Sqaurespace, but I’m not too sure if they offer what I need or should I just go with Shopify? I just fear that I won’t undestand the techy stuff if I go with Shopify. I appreciate any advice you can offer as I will take this into consideration when making my final decision. Thanks!

The future trends in the GCC countries will be similar with that of the western countries. Despite the forces that push business to adapt e-commerce as a means to sell goods and products, the manner in which customers make purchases is similar in countries from these two regions. For instance, there has been an increased usage of smartphones which comes in conjunction with an increase in the overall internet audience from the regions. Yuldashev writes that consumers are scaling up to more modern technology that allows for mobile marketing. However, the percentage of smartphone and internet users who make online purchases is expected to vary in the first few years. It will be independent on the willingness of the people to adopt this new trend (The Statistics Portal). For example, UAE has the greatest smartphone penetration of 73.8 percent and has 91.9 percent of its population has access to the internet. On the other hand, smartphone penetration in Europe has been reported to be at 64.7 percent (The Statistics Portal). Regardless, the disparity in percentage between these regions is expected to level out in future because e-commerce technology is expected to grow allowing for more users. The e-commerce business within these two regions will result in a competition. Government bodies at country level will enhance their measures and strategies to ensure sustainability and consumer protection (Krings, et al.). These increased measures will raise the environmental and social standards in the countries, factors that will determine the success of e-commerce market in these countries. For example, an adoption of tough sanctions will make it difficult for companies to enter the e-commerce market while lenient sanctions will allow ease of companies. As such, the future trends between GCC countries and the Western countries will be independent of these sanctions (Krings, et al.). These countries need to make rational conclusions in coming up with effective sanctions.

Great review, very thorough. One point I’d add is how active the Shopify user community is. If there is a problem you encounter, or a question that you are looking for answers to, it’s not hard to find another shopkeeper that may be able to help you out. From their own user forums to reddit or even just posting a question on Twitter, one of the best things about Shopify is it’s community of users.
Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lutke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. In 2016, Shopify had 377,500 merchants using their platform who made a total of $15.4 billion in gross revenue. Their platform allows store owners to install apps ranging from Oberlo’s dropshipping app to Hurrify’s Countdown Timer app. Shopify’s platform is considered the best ecommerce platform with a 10/10 rating.

Thanks for writing the review. When signing on for the “lite” $9/month version, can you purchase a feature separately? I am interested in the abandoned checkout recovery option, but am not prepared to pay the $79 or $179 options. Birchbox has a two-pronged business: it offers a subscription in which the company charges members $10 a month to receive “personalized mix of 5 hair, makeup, skincare, and fragrance samples.” Birchbox also has an online shop that allows customers to purchase full-sized products.  As of 2015, Birchbox had more than 800 brand partners and more than a million subscribers.

Overall though, I would suggest that you use the platform (whether it’s Shopify or GoDaddy) that you feel the most comfortable with. Also consider that when you grow bigger, if GoDaddy can scale along side with your business, and provide you with more needed features as your business grows. I know for Shopify they have a lot of different built in tools, and all sorts of powerful add-on’s (their apps market) which can power small businesses to very large businesses. One thing great about Shopify is that they are built to be able to handle and scale with growing businesses. It’s not a coincidence that they are one of the best and fastest growing e-commerce platforms out there.

These have been divided into different categories such as Marketing, Sales, Social Media, Shipping and Customer Service. Furthermore, Shopify makes running your own blog super easy, since everything is handled from a single dashboard.
In regards to Shopify.. Back in January, we migrated over from a highly converting xhtml based hand coded site that had been serving us well for several years.. Our google serps were outstanding, we had top 5 placement for about 10 different keywords and were pulling tens of thousands of unique visitors per day. Due to google’s threats of Mobilegeddon, and their warning that sites which did not conform to mobile, (ie: responsive design) were going to be dropped from the search results sent us scrambling for a platform that would give us a responsive architecture without worrying about the hassles of coding a responsive design from scratch. I read every review I could find for all the available platforms.. actually went with a alternate only to ditch it half way through the setup process and switched over to Shopify. I was reluctant, worrying how this would affect not only our search rankings, but our conversion rate as well. Since making the move, we’ve had many challenges. I’m not a fan of theme based all inclusive CRM platforms to begin with, but with shopify, performing any sort of sustainable SEO at code level, seems all but impossible.
Even with all the advantages of Shopify mentioned above, there are some downsides with the platform. The most prominent downside is the additional transaction fee you'll be liable to pay if you don't use Shopify Payment. Moreover, plenty of useful and practical extensions require additional investment. Perhaps most challenging is "Liquid," Shopify's own coding language, which requires ecommerce store owners to pay an incremental price for customization.
I am thinking about listing older sportcards online and fazing out of ebay. I have been comparing a product like Shopify with CS Cart which would be a one time fee. 1GB storage is not much when you consider front/back scan of card is about 1MB…even the 5MB plan is not much. Is the type of business I am looking at better off with something like CS Cart?? My site does not need to be pretty….just quickly searchable with good scans.
I don’t think any specific website builders can get any pages or products to the top of the search engines by themselves. Getting good ranking for your website requires you to work on your onsite and offsite SEO and it takes time and consistency in order to achieve this! Imagine if it was too easy, then everybody can rank well, but there can only be 10 search results on the first page of search engines!

Focus on the User: With ecommerce, you can sell anything to anyone but you must be careful to know what you need to do to make website visitors trust you enough to buy a product from you. Pick the right website theme, choose the right branding and tone of voice for your copy, and keep your focus on only one or two target audiences so you don’t get overwhelmed.
