If there are any downsides, it’s that you may find the site a little constrictive if you really have a need for out-of-the-box design or functionality. Also, because you’ll need to purchase an app to add in enhanced features like email or discount popups, the monthly fees can climb pretty quickly. Still, the site—even in its un-enhanced-by-apps format—provides plenty for a beginning e-retailer to sink their mouse into.

I think Shopify and the custom mobile App that you want to create will be separate. So you will have your App developed yourself or with the help of a programmer. Then what you can do is promote the App through your Shopify online store to encourage people to use the App. Or, you can promote it within iTunes or other platforms though I’m not entirely sure how to do that.

We switched twice in three years- first from Netsuite to Magento, both of which were very complex to build our site on, and then to Shopify, which has proven to be a great decision. However, I cannot find a way to create a separate section- think ‘members only’- with products and/or pricing that is not viewable by the general public. Overall, you have the ability to either speak to a professional or learn about the system yourself. Obviously, some people hate waiting on the phone for a support rep, so we feel like the forums, courses, and videos are enough for you to figure out your own problems if you'd like. So, the support team has something for everyone (they're super knowledgable about fashion or jewellery stores), and in my experience, they're pretty darn responsive.

With the Professional plan, you can upload up to 5 GB worth of files and with the Basic plan you get 1 GB in space. So the more products you have, the more product images you would want to upload. So as you increase your products you sell, the more space you need. Increasing the number of products also may imply (at times) that you are growing, which is a good thing it that’s the case.

What I can’t seem to find information on is who stocks the products being sold, the company or Shopify? Say for example your looking to sell t-shirts, will Shopify stock these for you or are these stocked at the location of the t-shirt company. If shopify do stock the product, do they ship out from the US? Reason I’m asking is we’re a UK based company and shipping/customs costs from the US are always outrageous.

But it really depends on what your current situation is. If you’re finding that the Wix tools are sufficient, then just leave it as is. But if you find that you are growing and need more sophisticated tools from Shopify, it’s worth while to consider migrating over to Shopify. It will be a bit of work to do the migration (pretty much rebuilding your site), but it might be worthwhile over the long term.
