The next step in opening your virtual store is to figure out how you’d like it to look. You can do this by clicking the “Customize Theme” button on your dashboard screen. Click on the “Explore Free Themes” button to check out the options available as part of your Shopify package. Be aware that some of the themes shown actually have two or more overall skin options that you’ll see after you open the popup window describing the theme. If you don’t see anything you like here, you can click on “Visit Theme Store” and purchase a theme.
Earlier this year, in response to reports that Russian actors had used Facebook to disrupt the 2016 election, I wrote a few pieces about how one might go about fixing the problem. I am not sure I have solutions for everything, but what motivates me is the sagging feeling that settles in whenever society throws up its hands and punts. We can do better. [More...]
It's a little awkward, so we'll get straight to the point: This Tuesday we humbly ask you to defend Wikipedia's independence. We depend on donations averaging about $16.36, but 99% of our readers don't give. If everyone reading this gave $3, we could keep Wikipedia thriving for years to come. The price of your Tuesday coffee is all we need. When we made Wikipedia a non-profit, people warned us we'd regret it. But if Wikipedia became commercial, it would be a great loss to the world. Wikipedia is a place to learn, not a place for advertising. It unites all of us who love knowledge: contributors, readers and the donors who keep us thriving. The heart and soul of Wikipedia is a community of people working to bring you unlimited access to reliable, neutral information. Please take a minute to help us keep Wikipedia growing. Thank you.
That was a great review. There are definitely some beautifully made themes in Shopify’s theme store with styles for everyone. We ended up purchasing the Retina Theme which gave us the building blocks and tools to create a great first website. With a bit of additional help from online html and css editing tutorials like http://www.codecademy.com/ we were able to get our shop to the level we wanted.
Hi Jeremy. I currently own an on-line retailer. Our web-site and store is through Miva. This was set up by the prior owners who all knew how to write code. I do not. I desperately need to update our web-site and store but and sooooo confused as to what is the right platform. I am leaning towards Shopify (for no particular reason). We sell single serve coffee (pods, K-cups) and have about 200 different items that we sell. Our Miva store currently ties in with Shipworks to manage our orders and shipments. I guess I would like to continue to use Shipworks but it is not 100% necessary. I would love to hear your recommendations. Thanks!
Do you wear makeup or know someone who does? Then you’re probably familiar with Michelle Phan, one of the earliest and biggest YouTube stars. Phan made her mark with sleek, fun makeup tutorials. She also made bank, translating her 8.9 million followers into a YouTube partnership and inking endorsement deals with Lancôme, L’Oréal and Dr. Pepper. There’s something else filmmakers should know about Phan. In 2014, dance label Ultra Records filed a massive lawsuit against her. The charge? Copyright infringement of their music! Copyright law can be confusing. It pays to know where to find royalty free music, or you could be paying a lot more down the road!
eCommerce refers to any form of business transaction conducted online. The most popular example of eCommerce is online shopping, which is defined as buying and selling of goods via the internet on any device. However, eCommerce can also entail other types of activities, such as online auctions, payment gateways, online ticketing, and internet banking.
Business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce refers to the electronic exchange of products, services or information between businesses rather than between businesses and consumers. Examples include online directories and product and supply exchange websites that allow businesses to search for products, services and information and to initiate transactions through e-procurement interfaces.
In the decade ending with the first quarter of 2018, e-commerce sales in the U.S. grew from less than 4 percent to more than 9 percent of all retail sales, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics. In total dollars, retail outlets in the U.S. made about $123.7 billion worth of online sales during the first quarter of 2018, compared to about $1.3 trillion worth of total sales. Statista projects e-commerce sales to grow to nearly 14 percent of all U.S. retail sales by 2021.
Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon Web Services, announced that AWS customers would be off all Oracle databases by the end of 2019 and running on one of Amazon's database products. This is not the first time the market has heard something like this, but this time could be different. The statement comes on the heels of Amazon spending significant coin on Oracle licenses a few months ago. [More...]
E-commerce has the capability to integrate all inter-company and intra-company functions, meaning that the three flows (physical flow, financial flow and information flow) of the supply chain could be also affected by e-commerce. The affections on physical flows improved the way of product and inventory movement level for companies. For the information flows, e-commerce optimised the capacity of information processing than companies used to have, and for the financial flows, e-commerce allows companies to have more efficient payment and settlement solutions.

Ecommerce will also likely evolve over the years creating a more virtual or augmented reality experience for shoppers. Stores may eventually include features to help customers ‘virtually’ try on clothing. This will ensure that clothes fit the customer’s shape while allowing them to see what it would look like on before buying. Shoppers may be able to ‘try’ on makeup using their laptop or phone’s camera.
Can you help at all with any suggestions or is it a matter of contacting a web designer if I am to do this with Shopify. Also, may I ask what is the difference with Wix and Shopify in regards to payment platforms, although I know Wix has about 4/5 and Shopify 70 odd but am I better off to start with Wix, who have unfortunately discontinued the use of the Shopify app this week too.
However, if you use a lower Shopify plan, there are transaction fees associated with each sale (in addition to payment processing fee, such as those charged by PayPal). The only way to completely remove, or lower the transaction fees is to either move to a higher plan, or use Shopify Payments (which is essentially powered by Stripe, which I don’t think is available in China yet). So this fee can reduce your margins a little bit. Most people are okay with it as it won’t make or break your business, but definitely something to keep in mind.
You keep a database of your Shopify products in Google Sheets, but making changes to a product description in one tool and having to repeat it in another is a pain. With this Zapier integration, the changes you make in your doc will be reflected in your Shopify products. You can avoid human error, save time and rest assured that your store and databases match.
When it comes to business, you're only as good as your reputation. Indeed, your reputation is your brand. It is the substance your logo represents; it is the glue in customer brand loyalty. In a word, reputation is everything. Yet it's not entirely under your control. That doesn't mean you are helpless as a victim of false accusations, ratings, or wrongful attacks on your company's character, however. [More...]
Focus on the User: With ecommerce, you can sell anything to anyone but you must be careful to know what you need to do to make website visitors trust you enough to buy a product from you. Pick the right website theme, choose the right branding and tone of voice for your copy, and keep your focus on only one or two target audiences so you don’t get overwhelmed.
